2013 Creative Legacies

Opportunity to Develop

What & Why...

To provide opportunity through World Music, Arts & Dance for cultural learning and exchange within Belfast City; enabling the development of a peaceful confident shared society that can celebrate a legacy of individualistic and united creative culture.
Through significant funding from Belfast City Council's Creative Legacies programme, supported by the European Regional Development Fund under the PEACE III Programme the first phase of a four year WOMAD outreach programme encompassing festivals and showcase events has taken place with schools and youth groups in Belfast.

Part of the programme featured the first WOMAD showcase event which was held on the 21st June for Fête De La Musique (World Music Day) at T13 Shared Space Titanic Quarter showcasing Schools WOMAD workshop productions in Belfast.

The 2nd event was on the 30th August at the Skainos Centre as part of the East Belfast Arts Festival showcasing creative outputs from workshops held in community centres throughout Belfast & Newtownabbey. This 2nd phase of workshops and events were also supported by East Belfast Policing & Community Safety Partnership & Newtownabbey Borough Council. A small WOMAD youth drum & dance showcase also took place within Newtownabbey's Shoreline Festival 25th August 2013.

The final phase of workshops and events for 2013 seen the outreach programme expand to North Down, Banbridge, Lisburn & Belfast all of which fed into the final showcase event of 2014 at the Skainos Centre, Belfaston the 14th November 2013. Lisburn also hosted local showcase at the Island Arts Centre 7th November. North Down Council's PEACE III programme funded a school programme in Kilcooley, the Big Lottery Fund supporting WOMAD workshops in Kinallen, Island Arts Centre and Lisburn City Council supported workshops in schools Moira & Lisburn and the Community Relations Council assisted with funding relating to the whole event.
